Maybird was born in the summer of 2013 when singer/songwriter Josh Netsky performed at a small concert in the woods of upstate New York called the Stone Mill gathering. It was there that serendipity brought Netsky and his brother (drummer) Adam Netsky together with long-time guitarist Sam Snyder and new addition Kurt Johnson – and things clicked.
Mostly recorded in the basement studio at the Stone Mill, as well as various apartments in the Rochester area, their debut ‘Turning Into Water’ EP paints a picture of the sonic array that resulted from that night. The track ‘Big Sun Explosion’ was discovered by Danger Mouse and released on his label 30th Century Record’s first compilation in late 2015. The EP’s release followed shortly after. Currently the band is recording a follow up LP and exploring some new sounds.

MISSION ZERO is frequently asked the same two questions: “Are you guys twins?” and “Where’s the rest of the band?” Creating lush, shiny indie pop that fills a room, siblings Chenot and David Keith (no, they’re not twins) start with massive percussion and haunting vocals and flesh out their sound with both live and pre-programmed synth and guitar. As WPKN Radio put it,“They sound much bigger than a duo.”
In 2010, lead singer (and guitar and synth player) Chenot was inspired to write an album of solo pop. “I asked my brother to play drums and produce the record,” she says, “and eventually it was clear that we work so telepathically as musicians that we should make this solo project into a real band, and start touring.” That first album was followed by 2013’s Sky Candy EP, a collaborative effort that blends David’s fresh nonconformity as an arranger with Chenot’s pop sensibility. “The songwriting is basically now 50/50,” says drummer David, and their third album, People in Glass Yachts (May 2015), credits both brother and sister as writers on every track. Of their musical bond, Chenot explains: “Take two people with shared DNA, add a lifetime of common musical influences and experiences, and you have bandmates who make scarily similar choices in live performance… and the vocal blend of blood relatives is about more than pitch; it’s shared timing and inflection. It’s magical.”

The siblings have played separately and together all over the world in a variety of bands (including David’s current gigs with rock icon Ritchie Blackmore in Rainbow and Blackmore’s Night). As Mission Zero, they’ve headlined at the world famous Whisky A Go Go, and opened for national acts Great Good Fine OK, Paperwhite, Jimmy Destri (of Blondie), Dreamers, Moon Honey, and Hank & Cupcakes. In 2016 they won the fan-voted title of “Best Indie Pop Band” in New England via The Deli New England’s online poll, and with both east coast and west coast tours each year, plus David’s growing status in Europe, their worldwide fan base keeps expanding.

Mission Zero has been compared to duos Phantogram and the Eurythmics, as they combine live and digital elements to create music that embodies the power and freedom the siblings feel by going it (mostly) alone and keeping total creative control of their art. Coming from a musical family, the duo has never doubted that music was their path, and with each album, their goal of making their livelihoods solely by making music comes closer. “We’re happiest up on stage together,” confesses Chenot, “doing what we were always meant to do.” Mission Zero is currently recording their upcoming album, Kit Cobra, to be released in the spring of 2017.
