DIANE CLUCK
http://dianecluck.info
DIANE CLUCK is a singer-songwriter of intuitive folk music. Her vocal style has been noted for its distinctly clipped, glottal beauty, described as “an unlikely mix of Aaron Neville, the Baka people, and Joni Mitchell…unaffected yet unusual.” (NPR)

In 2014 Diane released her seventh album, Boneset, through Important Records–a Mobius strip seeded with birds, death, boldness and heart. The album and its singles received the distinction of premiering through NPR’s First Listen, All Songs Considered and Tiny Desk Concert series. She toured the album throughout the US, UK, and Europe from 2014-16.

Diane contributed to New York’s burgeoning Antifolk scene in the early 2000s alongside artists such as Jeffrey Lewis, Adam Green, and Kimya Dawson. She’s traded harmonies and toured with CocoRosie (who released her Countless Times album) and shared stages with a wonderful diversity of artists including The National, Regina Spektor, Yoko Ono, Genesis P-Orridge, John Zorn, My Brightest Diamond, Devendra Banhart, Josephine Foster, Cass McCombs, Little Wings, Rain Machine (Kyp Malone of TV On The Radio), Rajasthan Roots, Daniel Johnston and Herman Dune. Singer-songwriters Laura Marling, Florence Welch (of Florence And The Machine), and Sharon Van Etten have all cited Diane’s work as influential.

Diane is currently fulfilling her Song-of-the-Week project–a fan-funded subscription run through her website (http://dianecluck.info/sotw-songs) in which she writes, records and delivers new songs to subscribers.

Diane accompanies herself on various instruments including guitar, piano, harmonium, zither, toy accordion, and a copper pipe instrument she built by hand. She employs singing as a healing, textural experience in which her audience may wander, ponder, or simply be.

PRESS QUOTES:

“Diane Cluck is a virtuosic talent with an emotionality that feels at once ancient and alien. Her mastery of her voice as an ecstatic instrument is so compelling.” -Anohni (of Antony & The Johnsons)

“Bell-clear and hotly austere, her lithe, dynamic voice hasn’t much kin. Categorizing her as folk is simplistic. (Cluck) emanates something humble but mythic. Appalachia or ancient Athens?” -Time Out New York

“She made me rethink my singing instincts. Diane is not just an amazing and interesting singer, she’s a philosopher.” -Sharon Van Etten

“She is likely one of the most refined and elegant songwriters in all of neo-folkdom. A brilliant idiosyncratic guitarist, a witty and wise lyricist, an imaginative melody writer with a powerful voice; her dark and introspective tunes are utterly captivating. Watch her spellbind the room.” -Village Voice, NYC

“An unlikely mix of Aaron Neville, the Baka people, and Joni Mitchell, Cluck’s singing is unaffected yet unusual.” -NPR

“She takes the voice to the brink of a new and beautiful language.” -Chris Taylor (of Grizzly Bear)

“When Diane sings, I am lost in a realm of infinite possibilities. She breaks me down, she gives me chills, she makes me cry–this is when I love music. ” -Bianca Casady (of CocoRosie)

“Diane Cluck seems like more of a force of nature than a mere singer/songwriter. She is the rare archetypal artist (without ironic quotes) though whom something pure and true flows.” -Brainwashed

“Naked songs filled with movement and metamorphosis…primal yearnings reminiscent of the broken coo of an outraged owl or howling bark of a horny dove…contagiously introspective and joyfully declarative.” -Voodoo-Eros

“Her songs have an irregular, or even cellular, logic.” -Other Music
