Walker Lukens w/ Rudeyna and Bud Collins Trio at BAR – Free Show!

June 21, 2017 @ 9:00 PM - 12:30 AM

Manic Presents:

Walker Lukens
Walker Lukens has been called ‘one of the best songwriters in Texas’ (Free Press Houston.) The Austin-based, Houston-bred singer, multi-instrumentalist has been called ‘wonderfully inventive’ (NPR World Cafe,) a ‘non-sexually intimidating version of Prince’ (Austin Chronicle,) and a ‘veteran balladeer with sudden indie rock ambitions’ (Indy Week.) Walker thinks its important that you realize his name is not Walter.

In 2013, he released his first full length record, Devoted. It received praise from outlets like NPR’s All Songs Considered, American Songwriter, Austin American Statesman, Austin Chronicle, and Billboard and took Lukens and his backing band, The Side Arms, all over the US.

After meeting Spoon drummer Jim Eno in a bar, Walker & The Side Arms started recording new music at with him at his studio, Public Hi-Fi. Their first collaboration, ‘Every Night,’ has been streamed over a million times now. Their second collaboration, ‘Lifted’ from Never Understood EP (Modern Outsider) spent 8 weeks on the specialty commercial radio charts and garnered Walker spots at festivals across the country.

Their 3rd collaboration Ain’t Got A Reason EP premiered on Paste in April 2017.

Born into Beirut’s civil war, Rudeyna was wrapped in headphones and blankets so she’d hear music instead of bombs. These experiences inspire Rudeyna’s devotion to music, community and the power we all have to make life rich for each other. Once in the US, she followed music and had the privilege of being a Thelonious Monk Institute finalist, performing for Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter… etc. From Beirut, Lebanon to New Haven, CT, the music is inspired by international and local influences, and the live project is brought to life by Rudeyna (Vocals), Bill Readey (Guitar), Lydia Iarocci (Bass), Fred DiLeone (Keys), and Kenny Owens (Drums). Sounds like a co-writing collaboration of Freddy Mercury, Bjork and Thelonious Monk, or Nina Simone starring in Ziggy Stardust, or T. M. Thiagarajan composing for Charlie Chaplin.

Bud Collins Trio
Among other inauspicious activities, they appeared on MTV’s basement tapes (Fisticuffs, 1990), and played on the grass courts at the Tennis Hall of fame in Newport RI at the induction of their namesake, tennis great and TV and print journalist Bud Collins.

They have played live with Maceo Parker, Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors, and Bob Mould among many others.

From 1996 to 2008, the band members split up and went separate ways, but the slings and arrows of fortune were not enough to deter the Bud Collins Trio alumni from re-forming in late 2008 to once again pursue their unique directions in music.

Working odd hours in a dark laboratory in the woods, and enlisting members from all phases of the band’s existence, they have developed a fresh catalog of all new music that shows true discipline, maturity of writing and playing, and technical expertise, and retains the original creative energy that made Bud Collins Trio what it was back in 87…

Join the “BC3” for a new and re-imagined musical adventure that knows no genre, no boundary, only the expression of completely unique lyrical and musical ideas and wonderful inventive sounds!
