BRIDGEPORT — A man found slumped over the wheel after a crash in the city’s Black Rock neighborhood Thursday morning died from two gunshot wounds to the chest, according to police.
Shortly after 8 a.m., police responded to several 911 calls about shots fired in the area of Fox Street near Canfield Avenue, according to Capt. Brian Fitzgerald.
Officers found a one-car crash at the intersection, and found the driver with apparent gunshot wounds to the torso, Fitzgerald said. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.
Fitzgerald said the 44-year-old man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Thursday’s early morning fatal shooting marks the city’s 15th homicide of the year.
Fire units dispatched for an alarm call — which ended up being a false alarm — shortly after 8 a.m. were urged to use caution by the dispatcher, who told firefighters police were responding to a call of shots fired in the area of Fox Street.
Minutes later, initial dispatch reports indicated, the dispatcher told firefighters that police had confirmed a person shot on Fox Street.
Detectives remained at the scene later Thursday morning, collecting what Fitzgerald called “a significant amount of evidence.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Winkler at 203-581-5224 or the police tips line at 203-576-TIPS.
