Feds: Waterbury man redistributed drugs for trafficking network

WATERBURY — A city man faces federal gun charges after investigators discovered he was involved in a drug trafficking network, authorities said.

Marbin “Rabia” Jimenez, 32, was arrested Monday and charged on a federal criminal complaint with possession with intent to distribute heroin and fentanyl and conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute heroin and fentanyl.

The charges against him stemmed from an investigation into a Waterbury drug trafficking operation led by Nestor Sosa Ortiz, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Attorney for Connecticut John Durham.

During the investigation, law enforcement learned that Sosa-Ortiz’s operation would get large amounts of heroin and fentanyl from suppliers in Connecticut and New York, and then sell those drugs throughout New Haven County, authorities said.

Sosa-Ortiz was picked up in New York City on a separate federal heroin and fentanyl trafficking charge in May 2019.

He continued to run his drug network while in jail, smuggling cellphones in to stay in touch with his various accomplices, including his sisters Isamelis Sosa-Ortiz and Imirici Sosa-Ortiz, officials said.

A federal grand jury returned an indictment on Nov. 6, 2019, that charged 15 members of Sosa’s drug trafficking ring with conspiring to distribute heroin and fentanyl, officials said.

A superseding indictment returned in January added an additional defendant.

Investigators learned Jimenez was a redistributor for Sosa-Ortiz’s drug trafficking operation, authorities said. Law enforcement made three controlled purchases from him throughout July and August. He was arrested on Monday in Waterbury.

At the time of his arrest, authorities said, Jimenez was in possession of “a distribution quantity of fentanyl.”
