BRIDGEPORT — A newborn baby was delivered Wednesday in the backseat of a car with the help of the child’s father, a police detective, a citizen and medics.
Detective Jorge Cintron came upon a motor vehicle stopped at the intersection of Stratford and Seaview avenues around 9:30 a.m.
“He was waved down by the motorist who informed him that his wife was in the backseat of the car and was giving birth,” said Scott Appleby, the city’s director of the Office of Emergency Management & Homeland Security/Emergency Communications.
“Detective Cintron rendered aid to the mother and saw that she was in fact giving birth, and that the baby had begun to crown.
Cintron called for medical assistance while helping the baby’s father with the delivery, Appleby said.
Appleby said a citizen who was passing by stopped and provided the mother and baby with blankets.
Appleby said the mother and baby girl “were last reported to be healthy and both were taken to the hospital.”
He said “the collaborative effort of the police and the public helped to ensure that the family remained comfortable and supported during this stressful, and at the same time, joyous occasion.”
