Milford PD: Stratford man stole dead man’s car

MILFORD — A Stratford man has been charged with stealing the vehicle of a dead man last fall, according to police.

Melvin Person, 59, of Hollister Street in Stratford, turned himself in on an active warrant for his arrest on Sept. 26 in connection with a vehicle theft last year, police said Tuesday.

Milford police responded to the Devon Motel at 438 Bridgeport Ave. on Oct. 5, 2019, on a report of an unresponsive male victim. He was later pronounced dead.

Police said an investigation revealed the individual’s death was not a homicide, but did not expand further on his cause of death.

But, during the investigation, police learned that the victim’s vehicle was missing — and soon found that it had been stolen.

When the vehicle was found later and processed by detectives, police said, DNA linked Person to the vehicle. Detectives applied for and were granted an arrest warrant.

Person was charged with third-degree larceny. He was released on a promise to appear. He is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 2.
