BRIDGEPORT — One person died and four others were injured Wednesday in an accident at the corner of Park Avenue and Thorme Street, police said.
Police identified Sydel Kugell, 78, of Prospect, as the person who died in the accident, which occurred just before 5 p.m.
Sgt. Gabe Meszaros said first responders found a two-car crash involving a 2008 Acura TI and a 2015 Lexus ES 350.
The Lexus, being driven by an 81-year-old Prospect man, was headed south on Park Avenue and stopped for the red light at the intersection with Thorme Street, Meszaros said.
Meszaros said once the light changed, the driver of the Lexus started to turn left onto Thorme Street. But, the sergeant said, as the 81-year-old man crossed the right lane of the northbound side of Park Avenue, a 19-year-old Bridgeport resident driving the Acura TI “at a high rate of speed” collided with the Lexus.
Meszaros said the impact caused extensive damage to the front passenger area of the vehicle, where Kugell was sitting.
There were two other people in the Acura, an 18-year-old Bridgeport resident and a juvenile. Meszaros said the juvenile initially fled after the crash but came back soon after to seek medical attention.
The five individuals involved in the accident were all taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center.
Meszaros said the Acura’s occupants had minor, non-life-threatening injuries. He said the driver of the Lexus also had minor, non-life-threatening injuries, while Kugell sustained “significant, serious injuries.” She succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
The collision remains under investigation.
