Police: Man wanted for trying to kill girlfriend in Waterbury

WATERBURY — Detectives have secured an arrest warrant for a man described as “armed and dangerous” after he got into an argument with a woman over the weekend and punched her in the face before shooting her, according to police.

Police on Monday identified the alleged shooter as Yadeil Figueroa, 28, of Willow Street in Waterbury.

Detectives hold a warrant for Figueroa that will charge him with criminal attempt at murder, first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, carrying a pistol without a permit, illegal discharge of a firearm, criminal possession of a pistol and criminal possession of a firearm/ammunition.

The charges stemmed from an incident that occurred shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday, police said.

Lt. David Silverio said police were notified about a gunshot wound victim who was dropped off at Saint Mary’s Hospital. Silverio said officers were told a 25-year-old woman was dropped off at the hospital by a dark-colored Acura. Silverio said the two people who were in the vehicle with the victim left before officers arrived.

The victim was shot in the hip on Willow Street, Silverio said.

Investigating officers found an empty shell casing in the area of Willow Street at Plaza Avenue, and ultimately determined that Figueroa was the alleged gunman, Silverio said.

“The investigation determined that Figueroa got into an argument with the victim outside on Willow Street,” Silverio said. “During this argument, Figueroa started to punch the victim in the face. At one point, the victim and Figueroa separated. Figueroa pulled out a handgun and started to approach the victim. The victim ran when she saw the gun.”

Silverio said Figueroa shot at the victim, hitting her in the left hip area.

The victim ran across the street and hid behind a car while Figueroa followed after her and fired at least two more shots, Silverio said. He said Figueroa stopped shooting when others in the area intervened.

The victim ran down Willow Street and was picked up by two friends who took her to the hospital, Silverio said. She survived the assault.

Police ask anyone who spots Figueroa to call law enforcement immediately.

“Use caution and do not approach or make contact with Figueroa,” Silverio said. “Figueroa should be considered armed and dangerous.”

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call 203-574-6911 or 911.
