Police: Meriden homicide suspect taken into custody in Puerto Rico

MERIDEN — An alleged suspect tied to the homicide of Casey Schoonover earlier this month was taken into custody in Puerto Rico on Wednesday, police officials said.

Schoonover, 34, was shot in the area of Foster Court on Oct. 4 and rushed to Midstate Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries, according to Lt. John Mennone.

The shooting was ruled a homicide.

Davis Omar Roman Villanueva, 32, was taken into custody in Puerto Rico in connection with a Oct. 4, 2020, homicide in Meriden, Conn.

Investigators identified a suspect in the killing as 32-year-old Davis Omar Roman Villanueva, Mennone said.

Villanueva was taken into custody by the Aguadilla Police Department and U.S. marshals in Puerto Rico on Wednesday. Meriden police praised all agencies involved, adding that without the teamwork, “this case would have taken longer to resolve.”

Mennone said the department is working to arrange for Villanueva’s return to Connecticut.

When he returns to Meriden, Villanueva will be processed on charges of murder and criminal possession of a firearm, with bond set at $2 million, Mennone said.

“We encourage the community to continue to assist our department in cases like this and to trust that our partnership with the community will remain strong,” Mennone said.

“Finally, the Meriden Police Department would like to send its deepest condolences to the family of Casey Schoonover,” the lieutenant added. “Our staff and specifically Detective David Visconti worked tirelessly to bring this case to a successful conclusion. We pray that this gives the family some closure to this tragic incident.”
