Former Quinnipiac defenseman Karlis Cukste has signed with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda, the top minor-league affiliate of the San Jose Sharks.
Cukste, who was taken by San Jose in the fifth round of the 2015 NHL Draft, had four goals and 14 assists in 34 games with a team-best 51 blocked shots as a senior for the Bobcats. Cukste had 14 goals and 52 assists in 148 career games at Quinnipiac as the Bobcats posted a record of 86-54-10, including a 50-31-7 mark in the ECAC during his four years. He is the third member of Quinnipiac’s senior class to sign a professional contract.
Cukste, an alternate captain for the Bobcats in 2019-20, tallied four goals and 14 assists for 18 points as a senior and tallied a career-high 73 shots on goal. Cukste also led the Bobcats in blocks for a third-straight season with 51 blocked shots.
Forwards Alex Whelan and Nick Jermain signed with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack and ECHL’s Greenville Swamp Rabbits.
